I don't need a license to inspect your new home.... Nope!  Not in California.  Did you know your baby sitter can inspect your new home? And give you a report and charge you for it ?.Yep !
That's why it's so important to choose an inspector that has been professionally trained in the home inspection profession.  Experience in contracting, architecture or engineering can be an excellent background, (I have that) but it is not a substitute for the specialized knowledge needed as a home inspector.
Your Inspector should be a member of a professional association, Such as the California Real Estate Inspection Association (CREIA) or the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI).  Although some inspectors may claim to "follow" the standards without being a member, membership status with these associations indicates that the individual has passed a competency examination in the field of home inspection. They further require that members follow the recognized standards of practice and code of ethics and maintain a minimum level of continuing education hours each year.CREIA requires the most @ a minimum 30 hours each year.
